What is a MSSP - Managed Security Service Provider?

A managed security service provider (MSSP) is an IT service provider that performs any number of cybersecurity-related activities for its clients on an outsourced basis.

Services offered by MSSPs can include management of security tools, threat management, incident response (IR) and forensics. They typically serve multiple clients and utilize high-availability security operations centers (SOCs) that are staffed 24/7. Outsourcing to an MSSP can be an easy way for an organization to add specific security expertise they may lack, can create cost savings by eliminating the need to hire full-time in-house resources, or it can be used to augment in-house capabilities to accomplish 24/7 security monitoring for instance.
