Optiv Cybersecurity Dictionary

What Is a Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB)?

CASB describes technology platforms that help organizations better secure the use of cloud delivered applications (SaaS) and infrastructure.

Popularized by Gartner, the ease of use for SaaS applications has made them more accessible to many buyers that can now purchase them without explicit vetting by the IT security department (creating shadow IT). This new business approach creates obvious security risks for which CASBs were designed to address.

CASBs help organizations gain visibility to their shadow IT, enforce data protection policies and boost threat protection related to these cloud resources.
